From 1976 to 1991, Hau Giang consisted of three current administrative units: Can Tho city, Soc Trang and Hau Giang province. At the end of 1991, Hau Giang province was divided into two provinces: Can Tho and Soc Trang. On Jan 1st, 2004, Can Tho province was divided into Can Tho, the central city and Hau Giang province today.
